Frequently Asked Questions

What is Somatic Physical Therapy?

Do you know your body’s true baseline? Do you really have a “bad back”, or have you just been unable to find the right person to help you? Just knowing where you stand is a strong step in the right direction on your journey to pain relief. Using one-on-one consultation, musculoskeletal assessments and motion analysis, Somatic PT will help you set up a specific plan to help you achieve your goals and live your best active life moving forward. This isn’t your grand-parents PT office, long-gone are the days where you need lay on a table doing leg-lifts between ultrasound and hot-packs. Let Somatic guide you to reduce, manage and eliminate your pain today! Learn more about our treatment options.

Can I do PT after surgery, my doctor said I don’t need it…

Yes! Unfortunately, many surgeons do not recommend Physical Therapy after a surgery. Many of our patients will tell us “He/she said I didn’t need therapy and that I would be fine”. Standard medical practice is to recommend a PT Evaluation following surgery and a physical therapist will make the recommendation regarding a plan of care. You do not need a referral to see a Doctor of Physical Therapy!

Should I bring my X-ray and MRI reports?

You may email or fax your imaging reports directly to our office or bring them to your next visit.

What should I wear to therapy?

Please wear loose comfortable clothes that give your therapist access to the treatment area. Keep in mind that physical therapy often times includes exercises and stretching so don’t let your clothes restrict your movement. If you are working through knee and hip pain it may not be the day to wear skinny jeans to PT! You are welcome to bring a change of clothes with you to your appointment if that is most convenient for you.

Can you help me get back to golfing?

If you talk to most golfer’s, you will find that “golfer’s elbow” is just the beginning of their problems. Back pain, hip pain, neck tension, hand and wrist pain are just a few of the complaints I hear from our patients that enjoy golf. It is a one-sided sport that places incredible demands on the spine and supporting structures because of the nature of the sport. Even during casual weekend play, the lop-sided forces traveling through the spine creates imbalance and wear and tear within the muscles and joints leading to chronic conditions and repetitive use injuries.

How long is each therapy visit?

At Somatic, we promise not to leave you with an assistant to supervise you exercising while we work with other patients. We take pride in providing 50-minute visits that are one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Where is the office located?

Our office is located at 3580 Pierce Drive NE, Suite 180, Chamblee, GA 30341.

The entrance is located at the rear of the building. When traveling on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard turn onto Pierce Drive NE then turn onto Will Ross CT near Chamblee High School. The parking lot will be on the left side; there is a wheel-chair accessible ramp by the State Farm Insurance office in the same building for convenient access to our facility.

How much will therapy cost and do you offer discounts?

For a new patient, the initial visit will consist of a physical therapy evaluation and will include treatment that day. If you choose to pay as you go, our price structure for your first visit starts at $219, with follow up visit charges at $169 per session. Somatic PT offer discounts through treatment packages where the more you invest the more you save!

Can I work on things at home between visits?

Your therapist will educate you and provide you with home activities including exercises, stretching and posture recommendations. Check our blog article.

How do I schedule my appointment?

Somatic PT offers online booking for your convenience. You can start with a Free Body Diagnostic visit if you are still not sure if therapy is right for you. There are no obligations or commitments, this is a chance to have a conversation with a Doctor of Physical Therapy regarding your conditions.

What happens if I am running late?

We understand that life happens. Your time is reserved specifically for you, so please respect your appointment times If you are running late for your appointment, we ask that you kindly notify us if you are able.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Having a schedule conflict? No problem! Notify us within 24 hours of your appointment to cancel or reschedule. Missed appointments block access for other patients! If you need to cancel within 24 hours of your visit you will be charged a cancellation fee.

What is a Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) test?

When it’s not clear why you’re experiencing numbness, tingling, pain, weakness, or muscle cramping that doesn’t go away, nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and electromyography (EMG) tests may be helpful. These electro-diagnostic tests measure the electrical activity of muscles and nerves to assist your healthcare provider in diagnosing your condition and planning treatment related to nerve and/or muscle dysfunction.

What should I prepare for my NCV test?

During this test we do all the work. Please wear loose and/or comfortable clothing so your doctor can access the affected body area during testing. Avoid using hand and body lotions/creams for 4 hours prior to testing appointment. Discretely inform our office if you have any open wounds or infectious diseases.

What makes Somatic Physical Therapy different?

Our physical therapy program is built on a unique model, offering high quality one-on-one patient care. We see our patients for 50-minute sessions which allows us to give them individualized care and ultimately better results. Each treatment is delivered by your physical therapist, so that your care is consistent, and your goals are achieved.

Do I need a doctor's prescription for physical therapy?

No, in the state of Georgia you can see your physical therapist for 21 days or eight visits, whichever comes first, prior to receiving a referral from your medical doctor. The exceptions are patients who currently have Medicare, who are required to obtain a physical therapy referral prior to the initiation of physical therapy.

Do you offer online PT courses I can take myself at my own pace?

What if I can’t come in-person?

Is physical therapy covered by insurance?

We work directly with you, not your insurance company. Somatic Physical Therapy is considered an out-of-network provider with all insurance companies. Your insurance may offer out-of-network benefits that can be used for reimbursement after payment. We do accept HSA payments and will also provide patients with a “Superbill” to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement upon request. Contact your insurance company directly with any questions regarding out-of-network benefits specific to your plan.

Why is Somatic PT out-of-network with my insurance provider?

Our providers are mostly out-of-network because we found that the current constraints many health insurance companies place on physical therapy do not allow us to provide the quality of care we desire to provide. All of our patients are seen for 50-minutes, one-on-one, which may be a different model than what you have seen in traditional physical therapy. Because we see our patients for longer sessions providing individualized care, our patients typically get better faster and do not need to be seen in physical therapy for as long as they may need to be seen elsewhere. For patients with a high deductible or no out-of-network benefits, we do offer a discount through package options.

How many PT sessions will I need?

That varies greatly among patients. The easiest way to get specific information is to schedule a Free Body Diagnostic Visit. At that time, your therapist will be able to give you more details regarding your condition, recommended treatments and expected recovery time.
